Spiders are my friends. You may think that is weird, but I really don’t have any issues with bugs. Except maybe bees, but that’s only because one stung me in my eye when I was seven and now I don’t see so well on my left side.
I suppose the stereotype is that women don’t like insects and other creepy crawly things, but there are a lot of men who don’t like them either. Men tend to be more macho with their fear and just squish the poor defenseless bugs while women tend to react by running away from the situation.
When one of our girls complains about a spider on their wall, my husband and I just say “Don’t bother him and he won’t bother you.” On the occasion when our kids refuse to buy into the insect peace treaty, I have been known to scoop up the eight-legged offender and relocate it outside. Safer to be moved than squished I suppose.
Why do I like spiders so much?
Because I HATE ants. And spiders eat ants. If you’ve followed my blog over the last couple years, you may recall the time I had to have my house sprayed for spiders because the exterminator doing our annual termite inspection thought he saw a brown recluse in our crawl space. I agreed to have the house bombed to remove the spiders and all seemed well. Then the ants somehow got wind of the no-spider zone and decided to march their troops in to feast on every possible crumb in my kitchen, family room and office. :(( We battled the ants for months and all that time I was wishing we had a few spiders around to guard the cracks and crevices.
So even though I really have no beef with insects, the need for an exterminator to annihilate the little pests is often inevitable. A while back, I received a design request for an exterminator from Tammy – who runs her own extermination company. Yep, Tammy puts on her uniform, grabs a canister of pesticide and sprays until every last little critter is dead. She was kind enough to let me interview her and that will be forthcoming in a future post.
So for Tammy, and all the other women out there who kill bugs or a living, the exterminator design is now available in the Girls Can’t WHAT? Gift Shop.
Oh and as soon as I finished drawing it, my youngest daughter demanded that I buy her an exterminator t-shirt. I said “maybe” but she has asked me nearly every day for a week now. Hmmm….perhaps we have a future pest control agent in our midst…
