Golf Caddy?
Golfchick blogger, Kristen, posted an excellent comment in Are we Here to Golf, Gentleman? over the weekend. She brings to our attention the portrayal of women as golf caddies. Kristen explains that there is an industry out there that allows men to pick a local female caddy based on a photo and a profile. Each woman has a price attached and there is some kind of rating system involved. Apparently there are no male caddies available. Go figure! In my opinion, this is completely degrading to women. It is taking a lot of restraint for me not to find that site and hack them good…maybe wipe out the site and post a giant image of the Girls Can’t WHAT? golfer girl. Uh…not that I do that sort of thing (anymore)…

If women continue to present themselves as objects (and they will), how are men ever to be expected to treat them otherwise?

I have a slightly different take on this subject.
The way I see it, in our society, we women have a definite edge due to the high value placed on our beauty and sexuality. I see nothing wrong with taking advantage of that as long as it’s not the only attribute/skill we focus on, and as long we don’t see ourselves as objects.
If we’re vigilant about staying empowered, competing in a variety of fields at high levels and not accepting that we can’t do something just because we’re female, then I don’t see why we shouldn’t also take advantage of the enormous power of being beautiful and sexy.
The idea that a beautiful, openly sexy woman can’t compete at a top level intellectually and athletically…that a woman has to be one or the other… is what men are trying to perpetuate, because they know that in our society, a woman who has both, has an advantage over any man.
In any case I think it’s a very interesting topic and one that warrants discussion. Bravo to you and Kristen for bringing to the forefront.
