New Veterinarian Design

Posted by: gretchen on June 16, 2006 in New Designs | 17 Comments

If you read my entry titled “Don’t Be Such A Guy,” you will recall I came up with an idea to do a design for girls inspiring to be veterinarians. My sister is actually finishing up her degree in this field (Hi, Ericka!). Today, I finished the design and added it to the items available in the Girls Can’t WHAT? Gift Shop. Here is a little history behind the design…
The pets pictured in the image are all significant. The cat represents my sisters cat, Cassy. Cassy was a stray calico that we adopted in the late eighties. She was a solid-colored calico but due to transparency issues with the white coloring, I made her an all orange color. Cassy went to the tuna juice fountain in kitty heaven in September of 2004.

The German Shepherd is a representation of my sister’s dog, Shep. Shep is a rescue dog that lives out on the farm with my sister, Ericka, and her husband. Shep also travels with Ericka to her school home during the week as she finishes her DVM degree.

The pug in the picture is my dog, Quest. I love pugs and since it’s my drawing, I get to do whatever I want with it. I thought a pug would be a perfect fit. To see an actual picture of Quest, read the entry “All Because of a Spider“. Hope you like it!

PS – It wouldn’t be fair in the animal kingdom if I didn’t mention all of the rest of Ericka’s pets. Let’s see how good my memory is:

Horses: Fancy & Cody

Dogs: Rocky & Shep

Cats: Peabody, Xerox, Ditto, Mary-Kate, Ashley, Laverne, Shirley, Ralphy

Who else did I miss? Did I mention she lives on a farm?

Update 6/21/06: Ericka said it isn’t fair that I posted a picture of Quest and not Shep or Cassy, so here is a picture of Shep.

    Hey sis!

You forgot Spooky, Bobby Sue, Repeat (Petey), Carrie, Clairice, Pepper, Ellie Mae, Fairy, Timmy, Jose, Carlos, and Belle.
For the record, most live in the barn on our farm, and they are all spayed and neutered.
Save a life – adopt a homeless pet!

Gretch, that rocks. I really like the gradient on the dog. Nice touch.

    Dear Gretchen,

My name is Brian and I am in South Korea teaching ESL English to elementary-middle school students just south of Seoul. I am working on a classroom decorating project focusing on careers, and I came across your website tonight. I have had zero luck finding decent female career representations until tonight. The ones on your website are amazingly perfect for my project and I’m hoping you could send some to me so I can print them off and put them on the wall. Young girls are not given much career encouragement here and I’d like to change that. I have 200+ young girls (10-14) who it would mean the world to if they could see that their dreams are possible on a daily basis. I am very interested in the artist, farmer, mechanic, surgeon, veterinarian, ship captain and singer.

I wish I could pay for them, however, I can only promise you that my students, myself, and my stateside pug Oggie would all be very grateful.

    Sincerely, Brian

Hi Vanessa! A good place to start is with a local animal shelter or veterinarians office. See if they need volunteer staff or try to help out at their fundraisers and adoption events.

Also, try local farms… sometimes they need help caring for their animals and you could gain some pretty good hands-on experience there. ;)
