84 Year Old Woman Bikes 150 Miles in a Dress and Heels to Help MS Patients

Lan Yin Tsai is one very amazing lady.

Mind you, she does this all in one shot.  Not spread out over the course of days or weeks.  This 84 year old massage therapist rides her bike 150 miles in a dress and heels to raise funds to help MS patients.

So why the choice of a dress and the non-comfy footwear?  Because she says that’s how she rides.  Growing up in Taiwan, Lan Yin says bicycling was the normal mode of transportation.  She always rides in a dress and a pair of matching high-heeled pumps. She can’t imagine it any other way.

While working in an American hospital as a massage therapist, Lan Yin first learned about MS and the biking fundraiser 26 years ago.  Intrigued at the opportunity to lend a helping hand, she began participating in the annual event.  Her enthusiasm for the cause has inspired others to join her and several friends and relatives formed a team in her honor that raised over $6,000 for MS this year.

She says of her persistence:

“I always try to tell people, whatever you can do, keep doing it, keep doing it, and that’s why I do MS. When I start something, I don’t want to just quit.”

And so Lan Yin keeps doing it.  Not only biking for a cause at 84 years of age, but continuing to practice her massage therapy and caring for patients from her home business.

And in heels no less.

  • Lan Yin Tsai inspired my wife and I when we did this ride 21 years ago. We don’t do the ride any longer, but she is still inspiring!

  • As a lady of her time, I respect the high heels and skirt. Its some kind of statement to all women have achieved with so much stacked against.

I’m not sure I could go 50 miles – even in my tennis shoes. That is incredible!
