I wanted to be an architect and the high school counselors told me I had only three choices: nursing, teaching, or secretary. Now after answering your question, you can easily guess what “era” I grew up in. Anyhow, being the dutiful woman of the 50’s I did as I was told.
Not until years later did I say “$@#&% you! and started to climb out of the ‘box’ I was put into. The challenges still remained when I was paid less than my male counterparts. I had to be bold and aggressive (not that easy for me!) demanding equal benefits and pay. I figured at my age, I had nothing to lose. When I started calling the shots, amazingly they listened and came around to my way of thinking.
It paid off.
Now that I am retired, watercolor has become my passion and my blog shows the progression of my current work from start to finish: http://www.nanwrightart.com/ I invite you to visit my site and please leave me a comment.

Your art forms are so diverse and each has such a perfection about them. You are so highly skilled in what you do that it never ceases to amaze me.

Nan – I love your creativity. I like that your goals are to try new forms of art – that is fantastic! I love to learn new things, too. :)

I grew up a few years later than you, but was told pretty much the same thing. I remembered saying “Why??” and “You’re not he Boss of me!!” Hmmm, now that I think of it, I STILL say that. Luckily, even though I’ve had my share of road blocks, I can still wrap the boxes to look pretty & set them aside while I go on my merry way.
Thank you for helping pave the way!

It’s amazing the resources lost when we put people in boxes!
