Thinking back on my career in sports from little league all the way through high school basketball, I can only remember about 3 female coaches. The rest were men. Not that the men were bad coaches (well ok maybe a couple of them), but it was uncommon to find a woman in a coaching position for school sports. The playing field is a little more level today, but we typically only see women coaching other women’s sports. I’m not going to say one way or the other whether women should be coaching men (or men coaching women), but it would be nice to see a few more women at the grade school and Jr. high levels of sports.
Two years ago, during a shortage of volunteers, I had the opportunity to coach my daughter’s soccer team which was about 60% male. It was fun and no one seemed to care that I was “Katie’s Mom” or that their coach was a woman when almost all the rest of the coaches were men. We just worked hard and played our best. Isn’t that what it’s all about?
A coaching design has been requested multiple times and I wasn’t sure it would be very popular, but more and more people are asking for it – so allow me to introduce the first design of 2009, the Girls Can’t WHAT? coach.
