You Can’t Un-Neuter A Dog

Quest's PhotoHonestly, some folks just don’t think logically. Maybe I notice it more because I am a very logical person, but lately I am starting to think plain old common sense is a gift that only a few of us have embraced.

I went downtown to the city building yesterday to pay for the annual registration of my dog. We have to do this every year to prove that our pets have all their proper vaccinations. So I showed up at the registrar window with my paperwork from the vet and my check already made out to the city.

After three attempts at typing my name in correctly (she couldn’t spell it right even though it was plainly printed on my check), the lady looked at my paperwork and then looked at my check and told me it would cost more because my dog was not neutered. I looked at her funny and explained that he has been neutered for about 8 years now. She pointed to the paperwork and said that the vet’s office had marked the wrong box and it showed that he wasn’t.

I glanced over her shoulder at the computer screen and politely pointed out that all of the entries on the screen showed that he was indeed neutered and that I had paid the fee for a neutered pet in the past. She looked at the screen and said “Well, I will have to verify it.”

What the heck? If he was neutered last year and the seven years before that, then he is STILL neutered! So I casually mentioned that to her and said “You can’t un-neuter a dog.”

She thought about that for a moment and then replied “Yes, well, I suppose you can’t re-attach them.”

I thought maybe she had understood my point, but no. She proceeded to call the vet’s office to confirm that my dog was still missing his parts. Maybe she thought they grow back. Who knows? I am pretty sure that I heard the vet tech laughing on the phone when the registrar asked if my dog was “still neutered”.

By the way…I have no idea if Un-Neuter is really a word. Perhaps I made it up. Dictionary.com claims there are no entries for “un-neuter”. Maybe my sister the Veterinarian can set the record straight.

  • Well… Ok, so you can’t give him back his original “boys” but they can actually be “replaced” by implants called neuticles. No, I’m not making this up! (see http://www.neuticles.com) Still, for registration purposes, they want to know if Quest can reproduce and of course he can’t, thank goodness, neuticles or not. So I guess your answer is technically you can’t unneuter a dog, but you can boost his confidence with some plastic surgery!
