The following is an interview with biker Denise van Deventer from Gauteng, South Africa. This is part of a series of interviews with female bikers around the world. Each woman was asked general questions about herself and her interests as well as about challenges they face as a female biker.
What is your name, age & current occupation?
Denise van Deventer, 35, IT Customer Services
When did you first fall in love with bikes?
When I was a teenager and saw my guy friends on their bikes
Do you remember your first ride?
Yes very definitely. Was in West London, with my boyfriend who became my husband..1994. It was sleeting and extremely cold.
What was the first bike you owned?
Suzuki SV650
Do you race or do you just ride for fun?
I ride for fun, but also do track riding! Enjoy both very much.
What is the hardest thing about being female & being a biker?
I think the hardest part is when you are learning and getting the confidence to deal with your machine. I think we are told so often that girls can’t do guy things that we are intimidated by getting on a really powerful machine and really riding it!
What kinds of challenges do you face while riding?
Attitude of the people in cars ie closing the gaps and just not being aware of bikers in general and their speed.
What lessons have you learned while pursuing your dream?
Always persevere and always believe in yourself and your abilities.
What advice do you have for young girls who want to ride?
Know what you want and then pursue it.
What was your happiest moment?
My happiest moments are taking out my bike and riding with my husband (he on his bike) to beautiful places and sharing these moments and riding pleasures with each other.
