The following is an interview with biker Merandi Liebenberg from Gauteng, South Africa. This is part of a series of interviews with female bikers around the world. Each woman was asked general questions about herself and her interests as well as about challenges they face as a female biker.
What is your name, age & current occupation?
Merandi Liebenberg, 25, HR Controller
When did you first fall in love with bikes?
Probably about a year ago, I was actually not very interested in bikes, but the boyfriend bought himself one and I followed.
Do you remember your first ride?
Jip, out in a field where the kids (younger than 7) where lapping me… embarrassing…
What was the first bike you owned?
Not owned, but I started riding on a Gijiva 600 on / off road thumper and then the boyfriend bought me a KawaZ750.
Do you race or do you just ride for fun?
I ride for fun and enjoy track days every now and then.
What is the hardest thing about being female & being a biker?
The outfits… you cannot look very feminine in leathers.
What kinds of challenges do you face while riding?
I’m too short for my bike and the bike is also very heavy. I normally have a problem maneuvering my bike in parking lots, especially if the surface is uneven.
What lessons have you learned while pursuing your dream?
Trust in the Lord!!!
What advice do you have for young girls who want to ride?
They must go for track days / track schools. I’ve learned so much on the track and remember, always look where you would like to go and not at the barrier as you will drive into the barrier – target fixation.
What was your happiest moment?
Riding with the boyfriend!!!

– I´ve got the same problem: And then it’s annoying when they think you can´t ride just because your legs are too short and it takes you a while to get the maneuvers done sound and safely :-(
