Chicks on Bikes by Christina Shook is a Must-Read

“Most often a woman in a motorcycle advertisement is an object in a bikini or clinging to the back of the man riding.”

How true that is.

4girlsmug9Those words were taken directly from a new book called “Chicks on Bikes” by writer and photographer Christina Shook who aims to put an end to that stereotype.  “Chicks on Bikes” is a beautiful collection of women on motorcycles.  The “chicks” range from the hard core to the girl-next-door, the old to the young, the experienced to the newbies… from all walks of life.

I was privileged to get a peek at this wonderful collection and ‘wonderful’ seems like an understatement.  Not only are the photos stunning, but the stories woven throughout the pages are refreshing and honest.  There are no stereotypical biker chicks here.  These are real women who ride because they enjoy the power and freedom biking brings to them.

One story that caught my attention was from Jennifer Bromme:

WHEN SHE FIRST OPENED HER BIKE REPAIR SHOP she thought women would be a significant part of her clientele. But it turned out that men found it just as appealing to go to a beautiful, tall, blond German woman with a natural talent for fixing bikes. Everyone appreciates a good mechanic.

Like most small business owners, she works long days and spends more time dealing with phones and accounts than she would like. All that work hasn’t diminished her love of motorcycles, only taken away her free time to go riding.

She races side cars on the weekends.

Christina has captured the fiery passion of the ladies in “Chicks on Bikes” in such a magnificent way! I absolutely LOVED reading this and I know you will, too. In fact, I’m going to ping a few of my biker friends right now and tell them to get a copy. :D

Hi Sunshine! It’s not so much that she’s too old, Ella’s only 9!

To the poster above: DO IT!!! I carry a picture in my wallet of a gal who STARTED riding at age 94! I carry another picture of a fellow I met at Harley’s 100th anniversary party in Milwaukee who had ridden his bike out from California. He was 101! It’s never too late to start as long as you are still above ground! I’ve been riding for almost 64 years and plan to keep on riding as long as I can still throw my leg over my bike. I have 477,000 miles on her and we have shared the most amazing, beautiful and fun adventures together. I’m in Christina’s book on page 98. This book is so terrific and truly tells our story. It really is a “must read.”
