In my opinion, one of the most inspirational words in the English language is the word “Can’t”
How could this be inspirational?? The word “Can’t”…
… ticks off so many people
… hurts people’s feelings
… makes people ask why
… leaves room for improvement
… makes people think
… opens many doors
… makes average people shine
… makes many companies rich
… wakes people up
You can’t have your cake and eat it too…What’s the purpose of having the cake if I can’t eat it?? Diabetics have been told that they can’t live like they used to. Alot of the good things were taken away with the onset of the disease…not just the sugary things…let’s go a little deeper…I’m sure before diabetes became manageable it was said that “You can’t expect to live a normal life” so with that in mind, enough people got ticked off and changed the definition of NORMAL by creating the services, medicines and tools by which millions of people live by every day. Now you can have your cake and eat it too…as long as it’s made with nutrasweet and eaten in moderation… :)
“You can’t change the way things are – White and Black will always be separate, that’s just the way it has always been and always will be…” – Hello!?!?!…the only thing constant is change…ignorance breeds fear and fear is your worst enemy…fear makes people do stupid things and that’s why they say you have nothing to fear but fear itself. Someone sure got their feelings hurt when they were told “You can’t integrate races in society” because without that “CAN’T” we may be living totally different today. I’m sure they told President Abraham Lincoln, Dr. Martin Luther King, Muhammed Ali, James Brown, Mr. T and many others that they “Can’t” do something…glad they didn’t just accept that kind of thinking.
“You can’t live with your head in the clouds, live life with your feet planted firmly on solid ground” Right?? If we followed that advice we would have believed “If God wanted man to fly she would have given him wings” Sometimes someone has to break the silence and just ask “WHY?” Why can’t we fly, why can’t we cure diseases, why do people have to die??? Some of the best answers come from the questions we are afraid to ask…Why Not?
Anyone that says that something “Can’t” be done leaves room for improvement…it says…”I’m all out of ideas and I am the only one holding you back from comming up with better answers if you belive me” To me it translates to “Prove me wrong” If you build a better mousetrap someone will build a better mouse.
Think of some of the most puzzling things that people have said in the past…”You can’t sail that far off in that direction or else you will fall off the end of the earth!”, “You can’t eat pop rocks and drink soda or you will die”, “You can’t put a man on the moon” Wow…were they wrong…but it probably sounded good at the time…makes you wonder what sounds good now that’s probably wrong or will be proved wrong in the future…maybe you’re the one to change things…makes you think huh?
“You can’t do this job any more efficient then it already is being done” Times change, technology changes and those who fail to follow will only enjoy the brief success they created. Imagine if everyone was happy with the way the first cars were built…or even the cars built 20 years ago…today we have to do more with less…I’m pretty sure that’s one of the few things that WON’T change in the near future.
If YOU can’t find a way to do something better – you’ve just given someone else an opportunity to excel. Take a simple device such as a flashlight…it’s made up of a bulb, some batteries, a switch, wires and a case…but that is a product of several other peoples inventions…Where someone else stopped…someone continued…I’m sure that everyone who has ever created anything of value started off as an average person with above average aspirations.
“You can’t make any money selling rocks as pets!” Every day people come up with some of the strangest ideas, and every day someone takes some of those ideas seriously…and WHAM! Someone makes some money…but the companies that listen and take action sometimes make alot more money then the actual inventors…but none the less…”CAN’T” sells lots of things. “When you CAN’T smoke, chew”, “You CAN’T eat just one”, “You CAN’T beat a Reeses”, “You CAN’T buy a better beer”, “You CAN’T fool mother nature”…girl…I’m showing my age…
How many times do you have to see the word “CAN’T” in your daily lives and not see opportunity, prosperity, a chance to excel, something to be proud of, your contribution to society waiting…girls can’t play sports as good as guys? Women can’t perform at the same level as men? Girls can’t WHAT?(R) Why not wake up and ask…Why can’t we have a woman president? Why can’t we change the rules? Why can’t God be a Woman? Sometimes the answers to those questions bring up more questions and bring us to the root of the answer…clarify…and it will be then and only then we will realize that in order for us to truly live sometimes we have to make people mad, hurt their feelings, get them to ask “WHY?”, demand improvement, get people to think, open some doors, shine your average little heart out, make others lives richer instead of making companies rich…but before we can do that…
…we must ourselves
…wake up.

=d> Excellent post! ‘Can’t’ is such a provocative word. When I first started this site I had to stop and seriously think about using the word “can’t” because it is a negative word. You are absolutiely right that we should see the word “can’t” as an opportunity, not a barrier.
Reminds me a little of an Amelia Earhart quote: “Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others.”
The word “can’t” is simply a challenge. Bring it on. >:/
