Recently Girls Can’t WHAT? was interviewed for a brand new site called Betty Means Business. If you haven’t seen this site yet, please go check it out! The site is full of interviews with business women in all sorts of careers. It’s fascinating!
During my interview, I had a great time chatting with Betty Means Business founder Kate Byrne all the way over in Australia. We really connected and had a great discussion on what it takes to build your own business from the ground up. Here’s a short excerpt from my segment:
What was one of the biggest challenges you faced establishing and running your business? How did you overcome this challenge?
One of my biggest challenges was finding people who do what I do and make a living at it. Sitting at home drawing cartoons all day isn’t your normal career path. It’s hard work with very little payoff in the beginning. People who do this are few and far between and often reluctant to share their secrets.
So the first thing I did to overcome this obstacle was research. I went after the people who were either doing what I wanted to do or something similar and I asked questions, studied, read and Googled the crap out of it until I felt like I had a solid understanding of this type of business model. I didn’t have the first clue about running an Internet business when I started. I am completely self-taught.
Anytime you run into a challenge, the first thing you should do is check to see if you have enough information to determine your next step. Fear of the unknown is paralyzing. The more you educate yourself, the more fearless you become.
