Book Review: 113 Things To Do By 13

Reading is one of my all-time favorite things to do so book reviews are naturally also on my favorites list.  Book reviews are really easy, except when it comes to books for pre-teens.  It’s not that the review process is hard, it’s just that my girls keep running off with the books!

113 Things To Do By 13 arrived back on my desk last night after some pleading with my 12-year-old to return it for at least one day so I could review it.  She’s had it in her possession since it’s arrival nearly 2 months ago.  I’ve noticed it on her nightstand, in the car and a few other places around the house.  It came back to me a little dog-eared and with some of the page corners turned down in bookmark fashion for further perusal – a true sign that she liked this book a lot.

The 123-page paperback reads more like a magazine and the fun, bright photos and design are very eye-catching and trendy.  While the photos of celebrities might be fun for the pre-teen crowd, I was more impressed with the photos of the finished projects…things like BFF bracelets or the diagram for a proper foot massage.  The mix of activities is a perfect blend for all personality types.  The things to do range from climbing a tree, to skin care, to craft projects, to sleepover ideas.  There are also a lot of “beauty tips” but I like that these are balanced with practical advice like “love the skin you’re in” and suggestions on  dealing with peer pressure.

113 Things To Do By 13 would be a great addition for summer reading.   The small paperback makes the perfect travel companion during long vacation travel or for a leisurly afternoon by the pool.  For more information and additional comments from several young readers, visit 113by13.com.
