Book Review: Sunkisses

SunkissesOne of my favorite activities in grade school was to color.  In fact, if I didn’t have so many commitments for today, I would grab a box of colored pencils and spend the day with this delightful book from Starla Lewis called Sunkisses: Coloring & Activity Book with Love Messages.

The characters in the book represent girls from various cultures – some in their ethnic clothing and some in typical “American” attire.  The activities range from traditional dances to skateboarding, painting, baseball, basketball and many other activities that girls enjoy.  Under each image is a positive phrase such as “I love running for my health.” in English, Spanish and French.  The book opens with 4 powerful phrases in the three languages:

  • I Am Brilliant
  • I Am Powerful
  • I Am Limitless
  • I Am Love

Starla’s drawings are clean and detailed – very easy to color, but still offering a challenge and leaving the color palette entirely up to the child.  Girls of any age can enjoy this as there is something for everyone between its pages, from the passionate tomboy to the frilly girly-girl.  I encourage you to check out the Sunkisses web site to learn the full story behind its creation and find out where you can get a copy for your child or organization.

Special thanks to Sherehe Hollins for sending me a copy.  I think this is the perfect addition to any classroom and I wil be donating my copy to my friend Leslie, who teaches Language Arts at a local multi-cultural school.
