Dear Sir

This is the way to NOT get my business. Since starting this Girls Can’t WHAT? web site, I get a lot of junk mail from local businesses offering their services to my fledgling company. Sometime over the weekend, one of these solicitations landed in my mailbox from an accounting firm. It came in a very nice envelope with a sharp looking logo printed in the upper left-hand corner. The envelope was addressed to “Gretchen Cawthon” and typed directly below it was the name of my company “Girls Can’t WHAT?”. I opened it to take a quick look at it and was amusingly shocked as I looked at the first two words on the page…

It read “Dear Sir”. WHAT? How can you mess that up? My first name is very clearly a GIRLS name! No ambiguity whatsoever. Who sends this stuff out? Give me a break. And to top it all off, they wanted me to let them do my taxes! Yeah, like I’m gonna let a company who just called me “sir” handle my financial details. That’s all I need…an accounting firm with the potential to insult the IRS.

    Nice!!

  • Ain’t that the truth? I cannot tell you how many resumes I have reviewed as I narrow candidates down from a list of 100 or so applicants to six I will interview.

Never has a “Dear Sir” gotten a second look.
