A common question posed to artists is what is your favorite? I’ve been asked often if I have a favorite Girls Can’t WHAT? design and it kind of makes me feel like the parent who just got asked which kid do you love the best. They really are all my favorites. However, some of them have sentimental value. Here is a small sampling of my artwork and the stories behind them.
The Drummer – This one is probably obvious, but since I majored in music as a percussionist and I play drums in an all-girl band, the drummer is one of the first designs I created. I have several shirts and hoodies and a hat with this design on it and it has been a popular selling design ever since it debuted in my shop. In fact, when my shop went live in early 2006, my very first online sale was for the drummer design.
The Computer Geek – This design came to me after a particular geeky evening with one of my best friends, Kelli. You can read more about it here, but essentially what started out as a family gathering to swim turned into a hacking session with Kelli and I sitting side by side on the couch IMing each other. A true geek moment.
The Artist – I’ve loved art since the moment my preschool teacher handed out our first box of crayons. I’ve taken a few lessons over the years and although my scope is limited to computer art and web design, it does not compare to the amazing talents of my wonderful friend Trina. The artist design was created to represent her and her crazy curly hair which she hates but I love.
The Billiards Player – My girls love to shoot pool and we are fortunate enough to own a very nice, Brunswick slate table in our home. We don’t play as often as we would like, but my girls enjoy it and it is sometimes the main activity when we invite friends over. As soon as I finished drawing it, my girls wanted “shirts with the pool player on it”. Of course they got their shirts and I decided it turned out so cute I got one, too. ;)
The Diver – My niece, Allison, loves sharks. Love is not really a strong enough word. She watches shark movies, shark week on the discovery channel, reads shark books and just inhales information on sharks. I fully intend to find her working as a marine biologist someday, swimming around in a shark tank in the name of scientific research.
