It only took about 900 some odd years, but Venice, Italy has it’s first female Gondilier. This title belongs to Giorgia Boscolo, a 23-year old mother of two who says the job isn’t that strenuous. In fact, she claims child birth is a much harder job.
Traditionally, the art of maneuvering the boats through the canals was a family tradition handed down from father to son. It has since opened up to the general public and Giorgia completed the 400 hour course and will go down in history as the official first women gondolier.
Was Giorgia ever told she couldn’t be a gondolier because she was a girl? I’m betting so. Her father says “I still think being a gondolier is a man’s job, but I am sure that with experience Giorgia will be able to do it easily.”
You bet she will. If I ever make it to Italy, I want on her boat. Sail on!
