Being a lifeguard is not as easy at it looks. It requires intense training and the job itself id very demanding. Lifeguards must be alert at all times and ready to tend to emergencies at a moment’s notice.
Some interesting facts about lifeguarding:
- Clara Barton, who heard about the International Red Cross movement while in Europe after the Civil war, founded the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. on May 21, 1881.
- In 1937 the Red Cross text for lifesavers, Life Saving and Water safety, was published, replacing a booklet, Life Saving Methods. The new text “an authoritative source of knowledge and information,” had no pictures of women rescuers.
- Men are four times more likely to drown than women.
If anyone says women can’t lifeguard, just respond by saying “Girls Can’t WHAT?” The lifeguard designs are available in the Girls Can’t WHAT? Shop.

That may be true these days, but if you read the facts posted above, that was not always the case. Many of my designs may not seem out of the ordinary for women, but they get requested (like this one did), so I draw them.
I’ve learned that sometimes people like the designs because they are involved in that sport or profession, regardless of whether there are gender barriers to overcome or not. They like the “Girls Can’t WHAT?” attitude and when combined with their favorite interest, the design sells. I try to stick with what I get the most requests for and the top requests are often surprising like… dancer or gymnast.

You gotta be kidding with this one. Of all the things “girls” can be , life guarding has to be really high on the list. Girl lifeguards are not exactly a rare breed. ;-)
