I’ve had this fantastic book on my desk for a couple of months now. I really, REALLY wanted to do a tandem review of it with my 12-year-old daughter, but she is so involved with school and sports activities that the only books she can squeeze in have to be on her school’s assigned reading list. However, I think this book should BE on the required reading list for every school. Perhaps it could be incorporated into the health class curriculum.
“You’re Amazing, A No-Pressure Guide to Being Your Best Self” is truly a great read! The language is current, easy to understand and the topics are spot on for teens. What I like most about this book is that it’s not just something to read. It poses lots of challenges, suggested journal topics and esteem-building activities to do with your bffs.
My favorite topic was titled “Role Model Remedy: You Don’t Have to Be a Celebrity to Make Your Mark in the World”. Kids are so bombarded with celebrity-ism from Hannah Montana to American Idol. If you asked most kids what they want to be when they grow up, most of them say “rock star”. Instead of telling the reader that they can’t be a superstar, author Claire Mysko suggests they find a cause that excites them and put their efforts into being a positive role model in their community. She also gives examples of girls who have achieved this and been publicly commended for their efforts. Celebrities with a purpose – brilliant! I am a firm believer that if you follow your passion, success will find you.
If you are a teen, I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of this book for yourself or for your friends (it would make a great option for a book club or a group activity). I’m going to add this to my list of great birthday ideas – what a cool gift!
PS – My daughter is planning to take this along on our summer vacation so I’m hoping to add her feedback to the comments when she’s had a chance to read it. If you’ve already read it, please feel free to post your comments below.

I am a grade 7/8 teacher and am developing a self-esteem group for girls to be launched this year. Topics range from peer pressure, media, boys, eating disorders and body image and friendships. Where could I get a copy of this?

I would say teens and pre-teens. Kate is 12 and she would definitely enjoy it. Kirstie is 9, but it’s not quite her speed. She could easily read it and understand it but her interests aren’t at that level yet.

That book sounds awesome! What do you think the appropriate age range to read it is?
