Today I was reminded that some of the coolest things happen under pressure. Today is one of my best friend’s birthday. I have been ransacking my brain to come up with the perfect gift, after-all the video she made for me for my birthday last week was just too cool. Yesterday, I called Trina at the crack of noon and nonchalantly asked “so what are we gonna do for Kelli for her birthday?” Trina ever-so-brilliantly replied “I dunno. Why don’t you draw her something?” I looked at the time and realizing my schedule for the rest of the day said “uh…there is NO way. What else have you got?”
Long story short, we insanely determined we could pull it off. Trina and I stayed up way too late last night in my kitchen with my laptop, printer, some paint, decoupage paste and a small soapbox. With Carole King, Karen Carpenter and Harry Connick, Jr. tunes blaring, we got to work. I take very little credit for this idea, and I am still amazed that we managed to finish it all in one sitting. As Yoda might say “Ambitious, we are.”
So here is my part of the deal…I got home at two in the afternoon and came up with not just one new drawing, but two new drawings made just for Kelli. Trina says they are adorable, tho, and I should put them in my shop so here goes… The first one is a girl on a soapbox. The second drawing is a girl wearing an “I *heart* Gerry” T-shirt and holding a rose with a black ribbon. If you know anything about the “Phantom of the Opera” starring Gerard Butler, then this design may make sense to you. If not, just know that Kelli is a huge fan.
So back to the birthday gift. What exactly did we create in my kitchen last night? Trina sanded and painted the soapbox while I cranked out the two new designs. Then I printed those two new characters along with the singer and the computer geek, which Trina decoupaged on the sides of the soapbox. The soapbox is currently covered in sealant where we left it to dry overnight on my garage floor. It looks amazing! We will be surprising Kelli with it later this afternoon.
I am usually not a last minute person, but I seriously don’t think Trina and I would have managed to do this “little” project had we thought of it a week ago and tried to fit it into our schedules. We just decided on a whim to do something cool for our friend and we put our talents and resources together and did it. It is awesome how motivated you get when you are racing the clock. ;)
So Happy Birthday, Kelli! You now have a real soapbox to use as you please. :D
PS – I may need to borrow it from time to time. Occasionally, I come up with a thing or two to rant about as well.

Rita – you hit the nail on the head. The best part is the smile on their face! =d>
Rita
Happy Birthday!
One of my best friends has her birthday the same day as you!
Unfortunally, she got hurt while riding her bike and was at the hospital on her birthday, but me and my friends bought a gigantic plushie and some little cute stuff and mixed all of that in a big box, that we gave her. She was so happy to see us there! I think the best part of birthday parties is the smile on the person’s face!

Aw geez, Kel – you know you’re #1, right? Who else is up at 3am to hear me whine? /:)

Can I just say…you guys are the best and I love you both!!! :x Thanks for making my birthday great!
I promise I won’t actually STAND on this soapbox, though. :D
But still, apparently I need to find more than ONE “best friend.” As I am now “one of many.” *sigh* I guess that’s what I get for having a friend who’s become famous. :(( LOL
Nope, you won’t live it down. [-(
But I love you anyway. :d
And of course, I “heart” Gerry. :))
