Hockey Girl with the Right Attitude

Faith HockeyPeople say that girls can’t play hockey and we are bad at playing. I play hockey with a bunch of boys and some of them are better than me, but some are not.

Once there was this guy that said that he does not want to play on the line with me. I knew it was because I was a girl and he doesn’t think girls are as good at hockey as boys are. He asked if he could play with the best player on our team, not with a girl.

But now he is used to having a girl on his team and enjoys playing with me.

  • this is helping me with my argumentative paper in my 6th grade class. My argument is should girls be able to play hockey with boys and i think they should cause i am leaning to play hockey right now.

  • Faith- My daughter is 9 and also plays hockey. She recently started playing in goal which is something that she has always wanted to do. She is not the “best” player on the team, but she does have a positive attitude, which you seem to have also. I believe that this will help you in the future in all aspects of your life. I know that sometimes its hard for her because some of the boys won’t pass to her when she skates out, but she has also made some good friends who see her as a teammate and a friend who loves hockey as much as they do. Best of luck to you in the upcoming season! And most of all, continue having fun playing hockey!

  • I too played hockey from the time I was 6 until about when I was 12. I always loved it, and even though I don’t play anymore, I still love the game. I was lucky that there were a lot of girls in my town who played too. But playing with the guys is great fun too.

Faith – I really love your post. First of all, your picture is way too cool!

Second, I really liked that you stated right up from that some players are better than you and some players are not. You have the right attitude. Boys are not always “better” than the girls. Individual players have strengths and weaknesses and it’s up to each athlete to work with their skills and learn to be the best they can be.

Thanks for sharing your story and showing that eventually that young man did accept you as a teammate. That’s what it’s all about. :)
