Whether you watched the SuperBowl or not last Sunday, you’ve probably at least heard about the Dodge Ram truck commercial featuring a 1978 narrative from the late Paul Harvey called “So God Made a Farmer”. If you haven’t seen it, it’s making the rounds on YouTube and a bajillion other places across the net.
It’s a great commercial, no doubt. But at just over two minutes long, you’d think they had enough time to equally represent all farmers. Not just the male ones. Out of the dozen or so (I counted 20) people shown, there were 16 men, two boys, one woman and one girl. In the real world, 30% of farm operators are women. If you take out the kids, that leaves 17 adults, so 30% would be 5.1 women. (Yes, girls can do math, too!)
Methinks we ladies were slightly underrepresented so I made this little infographic for them in case they missed the memo that women are farmers, too. Please pass this on to your local women in agriculture.

It just would have been nice to see a more accurate representation of all people involved in agriculture.

Another sexist ad? Too bad they didn’t realize there are a lot of women who can do the works of men.

That 30% statistic only covers US Farmers. I’m sure the worldwide number is a lot higher than that!

True Gretchen,
Back home, in the village, all the women are farmers-all.
It is amazing when it comes to cooking women do it all the time but the big well paid chefs are men…go figure.
