I’m graduating from college (Georgia Tech, Atlanta campus) in May of this year, and what a journey it’s been! I’ve learned so much and met so many phenomenal people while getting my education that I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.
Toward the end of my junior year, I decided to start writing down some tips for incoming college students – based on my experiences, my friends’ experiences, and lessons that I’d learned as an older college student. While writing, I decided to turn this helpful information into a book that would share my college experience while also encouraging other young girls to pursue higher education. I titled the book, “Single Black Female Addicted to College,” and I recently published the book! In the introduction of the book I say,
“Succeeding in life is all about risks.
I’ve read and heard about plenty of sugar coated advice books; tips on going to college for the first time…you know, written for “everybody.” Yeah, those never really helped me. I figured out how to map out my classes and make my schedule the way I wanted, but it took me such a long time to figure out how to become a respected student leader on campus, not just a “black leader.”
Although this is my story of being a black student at Georgia Tech, a school where black students are around 6% of the student population, I believe that any person – minority or majority – can and will relate to my words. Here are 50 pieces of advice from me to you. I’ve learned that if you want to write something universal, you must write it specifically about yourself.”
My book has sold hundreds of copies thus far, and I hope you’ll order a copy too! Check out: www.sbfacollege.com today!

Hi Vett. First of all how wierd that your TWO comments are from women named Gretchen, huh? Secondly, I just bought your book, which I will read first, and then give to a client of mine who is graduating from high school. I’m imagining it’d be fun to interview you for my blog, as I’m an academic coach helping students transition from high school to college. Would you be up for that? Looking forward to connecting more…

Vett – what a great idea! So happy to see it taking off for you. Are you planning to do more writing after you graduate?
