I wanted to share this gem of a photo, released yesterday after being discovered in an old family photo album. It’s a portrait of a young Helen Keller, around eight years old, with her teacher Anne Sullivan at her side. It is said that this may be the only photograph of Helen with a doll. “Doll” was the first word that Annie taught Helen to spell out using her hands.
If you’ve never picked up a book about these two remarkable women, I highly encourage you to do so. If you don’t like to read, there is a fascinating film about Helen and Annie called The Miracle Worker. Helen is also the author of some of the greatest inspirational quotes, including two of my favorites:
“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure.”
“Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.”
