A girl Surveyor is a rarity. And as such, I get all sorts of comments good and bad. I haven’t been told exactly that I can’t survey because I am a girl but stupid people drive by and yell at me.
I get looks if I am not the one with the shovel, you know the ” Typical Woman let the man do the work” looks, and when I am the one shoveling or banging away with the sledge the guys I work with get crap for it… It’s very frustrating!
Nevertheless I LOVE my job and I won’t let the stupid people get me down! I’ve worked too hard to get where I am to allow them to do that.

So don’t you wish there were color choices for tool belts too? My husband is the surveyor, but I am the crew. Same deal with the work sharing. We do construction layout (mostly bridges) so sometimes I pound the stakes and sometimes I bump the rod. Either side of the coin raises eyebrows. I do think that I get treated well by the guys though. I am older (60) so it might be my age but most construction guys on our sites are real gentlemen and are also helpful. My daughter in law is also a crew member and she would like a rod cozy for the cold days in the field. The NFL now has women’s cloths, why not a peach colored hard hat. I love the work. Both physical (climbing on top of forms to give an elevation) and cerebral (planning your shots, etc.)

What is “bumping” the rod ? Not familiar with the term, and have been in the surveying business for over 35 years. Personally, women have NO business in the field.
