I was told as a teenager, I shouldn’t run track or cross country because I was a girl. My dad never would come and watch me run.
My mom believed in me. I did quite well, but it hurt not to have my dad’s approval. I won lots of awards in high school. But, it saddens me that my dad was never proud of my accomplishments. I think he was more embarrassed of his daughter running track.

Robin – you are not alone. I’ve noticed that a lot of the “Share Your Story” entries on here mention fathers not approving of their daughter’s desires to play sports. Most notably football and bull riding, but there have been a lot of other sports mentioned as well.
It’s good to hear that you participated anyway and obviously succeeded. Thanks for sharing that. I’m certain it will inspire other readers not to give up on their dreams. :)
