My mom always told me that i was an active child who would rather hang with the boys instead of the girls. I grew up loving electronics, cars, climbing trees, and trying to fit in. So it was quite annoying to hear “girls don’t do that stuff” whenever i tried to learn something new. By something new i mean i wanted learn how a car works or how to build my own tree house. I’m the type who would rather do things myself so i can learn in the process, and i have my mother to thank for keeping my from getting discouraged.
There was a day when i asked a male customer if he needed any help with in the electronics section of the store. He looked at me with a weird look on his face and said “not with anything that you can help
me with” That comment hit me like a brick wall and it was hurtful and sexist. There happened to be a nearby male worker that the customer walked over to for help (I guess i wasn’t good enough to answer any questions). The good thing is that the male worker knew of my knowledge of electronics and actually played “dumb” just so he could ask me the customer’s question…in front of the customer!
It was like a small victory for me when i answered the question with a little smirk on my face. I guess you can say that a part of me was able to speak and show a person that I am no less capable than anyone else.
One thing i can say about me is that i’m also capable of having a sense of humor male and female ;-)

As a fellow geek I feel your pain. I was told at my last job that women don’t do web design. No joke. I built this entire site myself from scratch. Not bad for a girl, eh?
Your shop has some pretty cool stuff in it. :)
