Hang ten, girls – the surfer design has been added to the Girls Can’t WHAT? Gift Shop. I have to admit I don’t know the first thing about surfing although I would be willing to try it if I lived anywhere near the ocean. Unfortunately I am landlocked in Illinois and the best I can do is try to balance on a raft in my swimming pool. :D However, I got some help on this design from Paula over at Queen-of-the-Surf-Pirates who could probably outsurf most guys who own a board.
There are a lot of really cool surfer chicks around. Some female surfers that came up in Google include: Shelia Anater Ralston, Shelley Merrick, Rosemari Reimers Rice, Betty Ann Mardesich Van Dyke, Mary Ann Hawkins, Isabel Letham, Marge Calhoun, Linda Benson, Linda Merrill, Joyce Hoffman, Joey Hamisaki, Margo Godfrey, Jericho Poppler, Rell Sunn and Nina Wu. I know there are probably hundreds more, so please add your favorites to the comments below. I also found a great article about women surfers at SoulSurfing Wahine which included this quote from surfer Elizabeth Pepin: “Surfers are not just men, I think it’s important to dispel that myth.” I totally agree!
