There is one little word that often creeps into our vocabulary. We don’t even think twice about using it, but it’s power is unmistakable. You might think it’s harmless and that it doesn’t really mean what it says, but I would disagree. The power of this one tiny word can change your entire outlook and the reactions of those around you when you simply stop using it. What is it?
That horrible, monstrosity of a word is “if”. Yep, that’s the one. Remove it from your speech, your thoughts and your dictionaries immediately. That word kills.
Why is it so bad?
The word itself is not the problem. It’s the connotations that it brings along when it rears it’s ugly head. When you say “if”, you bring doubt into your experience. You are basically saying there is a chance that what you just said won’t happen. Is that what you really believe? If When you really believe it won’t happen, then just say so. Why tiptoe around saying “if”. You either believe it or you don’t, right?
Next time you find yourself saying “if”, don’t beat yourself up. Change it to “when”. You will have a much more positive outlook if when you eliminate the doubt. Using “when” in place of “if” in front of others leaves no room for them to doubt either. And if when they aren’t doubting you, then they are more likely to jump on board and help you move forward. Don’t place doubting thoughts in their minds by saying “if”.
Don’t believe me? Try it if when you dare. What a difference two letters can make. ;)
