I’ve blogged extensively on how marketers target women and how to spot a scam. You might say I am on a mission to educate women on how marketing works and how to know when a good deal is really a good deal and when a product is what it says it is.
As a shopkeeper myself, I am conscience about not over hyping the items I sell in the Girls Can’t WHAT? shop. They are gift items that inspire. Nothing more, nothing less. Part of the profit goes to help women in need to prosper and reach their dreams.
That being said, it is always amusing to me to come across an old advertisement like this one touting tape worms for weight loss. Yes, I realize that time frame and context are at play here and that perhaps at the time this was published tape worms weren’t the parasites we’ve come to know them as, but still. Eww. Sanitized or not, that is just creepy!
However, when I look at the myriad of diet products being sold (mainly to women) today, I can’t help but think a pretty hefty portion of them are merely the modern day version of the tape worm in chemical form. Look at the wording… “No diet! No exercise!” Sound familiar?
What do you think? Would you have been sucked in by the tape worm “remedy”?

I especially like the “easy to swallow” part! For some reason that comes across as all marketing, not truth!
